I can’t believe it’s been so long since I was able to get a minute to post a freaking blog. Thanks Irma!
Hurricane Irma blew through Central Florida on Sunday night/Monday morning and knocked out everyone’s power and downed a bunch of trees and just generally sucked. But let me tell you…the week leading up to her arrival was INSANE.
I’m pretty sure everyone has figured out by now where the “Plums” part of my blog name comes from due to my posts on social media about veganism. ( I legit ate about 6 plums yesterday). But the pyro part hasn’t really made it’s debut yet.
I only moonlight as a blogger. My day job (and sometimes nights too) is that of a permit specialist for a special effects company and assistant pyrotechnician. So basically, I talk people into letting us blow stuff up and then I get to help blow stuff up. It’s stressful as hell but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Anyway, Tuesday before Irma was set to strike us with her all encompassing fury, my coworker and I were down in Bradenton, FL to do a fireworks display for an exclusive prep school. The show went great but holy jesus on a cracker! That town had completely lost it’s mind. There was no gas anywhere. No water anywhere.
After the show was over, we hauled ass back to our town (roughly 3 hours north). My friends had been texting me before the show saying that our town was getting a bit out of control too. Hearing that, my coworker and I decided to go hit up a WalMart grocery store across the street from my house. Now mind you, we didn’t roll back into town until about 2am. There was NOTHING to be had at the store. No bread, no water, no peanut butter, no soup, no batteries. Shit.
Finally, a couple of days later, I managed to get my hands on some water and some foods.
I decided to give my kids the choice on whether or not they wanted to stay at my apartment during the storm or go to their grandma’s house. In the end, we all ended up staying with my mom and brother.
I am native Floridian so this wasn’t my first rodeo with a hurricane. In 2004, we had 3 storms back to back and lost power for over a week. It. Was. Awful.
Luckily we were spared any damage this time around. I didn’t have power for a few days (which is why the limited internet) but that was bearable.
So it’s back to business as usual around here. Sorry about the radio silence. Hopefully there won’t be anymore hurricanes for a while!
